Uganda Human Rights Commission Warns Against Silencing Media in the Name of Responsibility

Kampala: A member of the Uganda Human Rights Commission (UHRC) Crispin Kaheru, has cautioned against using the call for media responsibility as a pretext to suppress press freedom.

Speaking on Monday, April 28, 2025, during a press briefing at the Uganda Media Centre ahead of World Press Freedom Day, Kaheru emphasized that tackling disinformation, misinformation, and hate speech is a collective duty that involves both traditional media and social media users.

“We must all act responsibly. However, let it be clear: no one should misuse the call for responsible media to stifle press freedom,” Kaheru said.

He warned that the Commission will not hesitate to expose and condemn any attempts to silence the media under the guise of promoting responsibility.

“Freedom of expression is non-negotiable,” he added firmly.

The 2025 World Press Freedom Day, to be observed under the theme; “Reporting in the Brave New World-The Impact of Artificial Intelligence on Press Freedom .
