Traffic Police Urge Road Users to Observe Safety Measures During Holy Week

Rukungiri: As Christians across the country celebrate Holy Week, the Rukungiri District Traffic Police have issued a strong appeal to all road users, bus and taxi operators, motorcyclists, and pedestrians to strictly follow traffic regulations, especially during the Easter season.

This message was delivered on April 17, by the District Traffic Officer for Rukungiri ASP Abel Mbowamukama, during an interview with our news reporter at his office at Rukungiri Police Station in Rukungiri Municipality.

This advice comes in the wake of a tragic road crash on the Ntungamo Rukungiri highway that claimed six lives, including a police officer, and left several others injured. The collision involved a bus and a taxi, and it has brought renewed attention to road safety awareness.

ASP Mbowamukama urged bus and taxi operators, as well as motorcyclists, to obey traffic signs particularly speed limits and avoid reckless driving. He warned against driving under the influence of alcohol and using mobile phones while driving, stressing that such behavior leads to unnecessary loss of life.

He advised motorcyclists (boda bodas) to always wear helmets and ensure they have valid driving permits. He specifically urged them to purchase two helmets one for themselves and another for their passengers for enhanced safety.

Mbowamukama also cautioned drivers against parking in the middle of the road, as this increases the risk of accidents. Pedestrians were advised to be extra cautious while crossing roads, particularly during the Easter season when traffic is heavier than usual.

He further warned bus operators against overloading, saying it causes discomfort and increases the chances of accidents. Passengers were encouraged to report overloading and any other dangerous conduct to the police.

ASP Mbowamukama noted that while traffic police are doing their best to enforce road safety laws in Rukungiri, compliance from the public remains low. He concluded by urging all road users to follow these regulations to help reduce accidents and ensure a safer travel environment for everyone.
