St. Francis Buhunga High School Holds Annual Sports Day Ahead of District Athletics and Ball Games

Rukungiri: As part of preparations for the Rukungiri District Athletics and Ball Games scheduled for 14th June, St. Francis Buhunga High School held its annual sports day to select pupils who will represent the school at the district level.

According to the school’s sports teacher, Joshua Niwangumya, the event took place on June 6, at the school premises, where students from different houses Mandela, Nyerere, and Nkurumah competed in various disciplines including long jump, high jump, dance sport, handball, relays, netball, and more.

The school headteacher, Julius Mugisha Kakwara, said the sports day is held annually to keep students physically fit, refresh their minds, and prepare them for higher-level competitions such as district and regional games.

He added that engaging in sports also helps protect students from non-communicable diseases.He encouraged students to remain disciplined, focus on their studies, and always represent the school positively in all external engagements.

The Rukungiri District Inspector of Schools, Solomon Arineitwe, who also serves as the acting District Sports Officer, represented the Rukungiri District LC5 Chairperson Geoffrey Kyomukama at the event. Arineitwe urged students to actively participate in sports, saying it teaches discipline, resilience, and teamwork.

He applauded the school administration for consistently organizing such events.He also called upon all schools in the district to regularly engage their learners in sports activities for holistic development.

A senior one student Ackline Nahurira, the most outstanding student of the day, received several awards after excelling in multiple sports disciplines. She promised to continue training hard to represent her school well at the next level of competitions.

Founded in April 1984, St. Francis Buhunga High School currently has an enrollment of 610 students and 41 teachers.
