Sironko Deputy RDC Vows Action Against Striking Teachers Closing Schools

The Deputy Resident District Commissioner (DRDC) of Sironko District, Andrew Ronald Bakaki, has vowed to take firm action against teachers and head teachers who are closing government-aided schools and sending learners back home.

Bakaki on September 18, revealed that his office has received reports of school closures in Sironko Town Council, Bukhulo, Bukiise, and Bumalimba Sub-counties, where head teachers have allegedly locked up schools in response to the ongoing teachers’ industrial action.

The strike, organized under the Uganda National Teachers’ Union (UNATU), is driven by persistent salary disparities that have long fueled tensions in the education sector. UNATU General Secretary Filbert Baguma stated that the decision to lay down tools comes after three years of fruitless dialogue with government.

However, Bakaki warned that teachers and head teachers have no mandate to deny learners their right to education.

He further urged parents not to join the strike but to continue sending their children to school, adding that education is a shared responsibility.

Bakaki appealed to teachers to resume work while allowing ongoing salary concerns to be handled by the Ministry of Education and relevant authorities.
