Rukungiri traders commend UMEME for consistent power supply.
Rukungiri: A section of traders in Rukungiri Municipality have commended the Uganda’s electricity distributor company UMEME Uganda limited for rendering good services to them.
The company whose contract is due to expire in March 2025 has been distributing electricity to Ugandans for the last 19 years.
The government however through the ministry of energy and mineral development has made it categorically clear that it will not renew their contract and has now opted to entrust the responsibility of electricity distribution to Uganda Electricity Distribution Company Limited (UEDCL).
However business men in Rukungiri town have informed our reporter that UMEME has tried to ensure consistent power supply for the years it has been serving Ugandans.
Alex Joshua Kwikiriza who operates a welding business along republic road opposite Christ the king Catholic parish commended UMEME Uganda limited for their services and expressed confidence in the new power distributor Uganda Electricity Distribution Company Limited.
He however said that under UMEME reign, electricity tariffs were high.
Cosma Condera of Condera internet service center said UMEME has been consistent in providing services .
He was however not convinced enough that the Uganda Electricity Distribution Company Limited is going to offer services better than UMEME.
Meanwhile the manager Umeme Rukungiri Branch , Tugume Leophous told our reporter that they respect the government’s decision of not renewing their contract since it has the right of chosing the service providers to the citizens.
Evans Mutebi, the senior technician at UMEME Rukungiri Branch said the government is just changing the campany’s name from UMEME to UEDCL.
He said the workers will remain the same and further revealed that as UMEME, they have been providing quality services to their clients.
