Rukungiri Municipality Distributes Relief Food to Hailstorm Victims

Rukungiri: Rukungiri Municipality has distributed relief food from the Office of the Prime Minister to 1,262 households affected by a recent hailstorm. 

The relief package included 6,310 kilograms of maize flour and 6,310 kilograms of beans. The food was distributed at four centers: Kitimba Ward, Karangaro Ward, Rukondo, and Kahororo. 

The relief items were delivered to the municipality headquarters on Monday, with instructions to distribute them to beneficiaries within five days. The hailstorm severely affected several villages in Western Division, including Maaya, Kanyanku, Kaaro, Katobo, Kabeire, Kibare, Kafunda, Nyamabare, Nyakihanga, Kahororo, Mutara, Furuma, Northern A, and Kagarama. 

Speaking at the flag-off ceremony held at the municipal council offices on April 2, Rukungiri Deputy Resident District Commissioner (DRDC) Wilberforce Ahimbisibwe Ongom thanked the town clerk and mayor for taking the initiative to request the relief from the Office of the Prime Minister. He also appreciated the area Member of Parliament for advocating for assistance. 

Ahimbisibwe urged municipal authorities to prioritize vulnerable families, including people with disabilities, those living with HIV/AIDS, widows, and orphans, as per government guidelines.

Rukungiri Municipality Mayor, Charles Makuru, expressed gratitude to the Office of the Prime Minister for responding to their request and assured the public that the distribution would be fair and transparent.

Deputy Town Clerk of Rukungiri Municipality Paul Karenzi revealed that a committee, led by the municipal production officer, had been assigned to oversee the distribution process. The committee will ensure proper record-keeping and accountability, reporting to both the mayor’s office and the Office of the Prime Minister.
