Rukungiri Marks District Forest Day with Tree Planting Drive at St Raphael SS
Rukungiri: Leaders, environmentalists, and students in Rukungiri District on March 19, joined hands to plant trees at St Raphael Secondary School in Ruhinda Sub-county, as part of activities to mark the District Forest Day in line with the upcoming International Day of Forests celebrated annually on March 21.
The initiative, led by Good Forests Foundation Uganda (GFFU), saw the school benefit from a variety of tree species aimed at improving environmental conservation and promoting sustainable practices within the community.
Speaking during the event, the headteacher of St Raphael Secondary School, John Bekunda, expressed gratitude to the foundation for the support, noting that the donated tree species will play a vital role in preserving the school environment.
The Country Director of Good Forests Foundation Uganda (GFFU), James Tembo, highlighted the organization’s key activities, including the distribution of free tree seedlings to farmers, nationwide tree conservation efforts, and raising awareness about environmental protection.
Tembo urged residents to embrace tree planting and afforestation, emphasizing that the environment—particularly trees—remains central to human survival.
Rukungiri District Senior Forest Officer, Arthur Twinomujuni, commended GFFU for partnering with the government to promote environmental conservation.
He cautioned residents against indiscriminate cutting of trees without replacement, urging the public to work closely with authorities to ensure sustainable environmental management for improved livelihoods.
The Deputy Chief Administrative Officer for Rukungiri District, Hillary Agaba, noted that commemorating the International Day of Forests through practical initiatives like tree planting is key to empowering communities.
