Rukungiri Man Killed by Brother in Family Dispute Over Milk

Rukungiri: Police in Rukungiri are searching for a suspect, Ategyeka Barnabas, who allegedly killed his older brother, Henry Mugarura, a 48-year-old UPDF veteran, following a disagreement over milk from their parents’ cows. The incident occurred on the morning of 2 October, 2024, in Katooma Cell, Kigaaga Parish, Nyakagyeme Sub-county.

According to the Kigezi region police spokesperson ASP Elly Maate, Mugarura left his wife, Kiconco Blessing, at home and went to the family house where Ategyeka was staying with their sister, Tushabe Annet. When Tushabe saw Mugarura, she raised an alarm, accusing him of intending to assault her. This prompted Ategyeka to pick up a metal bar and attack his brother, fatally injuring him.

Kiconco heard the commotion and rushed to the house, but found it locked from the outside. She quickly went to Nyakagyeme Police to report the incident. When police arrived at the scene, they found Mugarura dead and Ategyeka had fled.

Police have recovered the iron bar used in the assault, and the body has been taken to Rwakabengo Health Center III for a postmortem. Investigations are ongoing.
