Rukungiri Leaders Divided Over Government Spending Ahead of 39th Liberation Day Celebrations.
Rukungiri: As Uganda gears up to celebrate its 39th National Liberation Day on 26th January, 2025, under the theme “Celebrating Pan-African Solidarity and the People’s Sacrifice in the Struggle for Freedom and Democracy for Socio-Economic Transformation,” a section of leaders and residents in Rukungiri District have expressed divided opinions about the significance of the event.
The former District Councillor for Eastern Division who doubles as the Chairperson of the People’s Fighting for Freedom (PFF) Amos Byabagambi, criticized the government for spending public funds on what he termed as unnecessary celebrations.
In an interview with our news reporter on January 16, Byabagambi argued that such funds could instead be invested in recruiting medical workers, supplying medicine to health centers, improving road infrastructure, reducing the cost of living, and building market centers to enhance economic growth.
He added that unemployment has risen, and essential social services are becoming increasingly inaccessible. Byabagambi stated that Ugandans are forced to sell their property to educate their children, but these children end up unemployed due to corruption and selfishness within government departments.
He called on government officials to prioritize initiatives that benefit citizens instead of spending on non-essential activities.

The National Unity Platform (NUP) spokesperson for Rukungiri District Owen Muzola, echoed similar concerns, criticizing the National Resistance Movement (NRM) for failing to address issues like hunger, famine, and poor wages for public servants. Muzola questioned the need for Liberation Day celebrations when many Ugandans are struggling to meet basic needs.
He pointed out that neighboring countries, such as Tanzania, redirect funds meant for such occasions to more impactful projects that directly benefit their citizens.

On the other hand, the LCIII Councillor for Kitwe Town Council in Ntungamo District, Mugyera Samson, defended the importance of Liberation Day celebrations. He explained that the event helps Ugandans reflect on the country’s history, celebrate peace and prosperity, and educate younger generations about the sacrifices made for national liberation. Mugyera dismissed claims that the celebrations are a waste of money, stating that they contribute to strengthening Uganda’s unity and heritage.
