Rukungiri Elects Special Interest Group District Councillors

Rukungiri: Rukungiri Electoral District has concluded the election of district councillors representing Special Interest Groups.

The elections were held on January 21, at Rukungiri Main Stadium and the Rukungiri District Council Hall. The exercise covered representatives of the youth, older persons, workers, and persons with disabilities (PWDs), with each group electing a male and a female councillor.

For the position of District Male Councillor representing Persons with Disabilities, Emmanuel Turyabagyenyi of the NRM party emerged winner with 56 votes, defeating James Rwamahe Oryoroba who scored 21 votes.

On the female PWDs position, Mollen Asiimwe of NRM won with 57 votes, beating Agnes Kenyangi, an independent candidate, who got 20 votes.

In the Older Persons category, Joan Kakwateki of NRM won the female position with 74 votes, defeating Peninah Kobusingye of PFF who scored 3 votes.

For the male position, George Byaruhanga Rukara of NRM secured 52 votes, defeating Eradio Baryengoma Tibanyenda, an independent candidate, who scored 26 votes, and Joseph Kyomugisha of PFF who scored no votes.

For the Workers’ representatives, journalist Isaac Tushabe, an independent candidate, won the male position with 17 votes, defeating Jothan B. Kamara of NRM who got 16 votes and Rubanzana Muhumuza, an independent candidate, with 6 votes.

The female workers’ position was won by Susan Abinsinguza of NRM with 25 votes, defeating Victoria Kiconco of PFF who scored 14 votes.

In the Youth category, Harmony Tumwesigye of NRM won the male position with 332 votes, defeating Jordan Besigye of PFF who got 120 votes, Ian Nasasira, an independent candidate, with 9 votes, and Innocent Agaba, also independent, with 78 votes.

On the female side, Marion Ainebyona of NRM emerged winner with 308 votes, defeating Dorothy Amutuhaire, an independent candidate, who got 107 votes, and Viola Ankwasize of PFF with 126 votes.

Speaking to our reporter this evening January 21 at around 8:30 pm, the District Electoral Commission Officer, Mr. Abas K. Namara, said the election exercise was peaceful and successfully conducted without any interruptions.

Mr. Namara has urged voters to turn up in large numbers tomorrow as the country heads into elections for district councillors, city and municipal mayors, and LC5 chairpersons. He assured the public that the Electoral Commission is fully prepared and that by 6:00 am, all electoral materials will be ready at every polling station.
