Rukungiri Electoral Commission Holds Harmonization Meeting Ahead of Campaigns

Rukungiri: The Rukungiri District Electoral Commission (EC) has held a harmonization meeting with aspiring candidates for both the constituency and woman Member of Parliament seats to plan campaign roadmaps and prevent clashes during campaign rallies.

The meeting, which took place on November 6, at the Rukungiri District Council Hall, attracted several candidates including the Minister for Security and Rujumbura County MP, Maj. Gen. Jim Muhwezi Katugugu, and Lt. Gen. Henry Tumukunde, an aspiring MP for Rukungiri Municipality. Some candidates who could not attend in person sent their official agents to represent them.

The session was chaired by Abasi K Namara, the Rukungiri District Returning Officer, who explained that the harmonization exercise aimed to draw up campaign schedules ahead of the official campaign period, which begins on 10th November 2025. Elections are slated for 15th January next year.

Namara urged candidates to conduct peaceful campaigns, avoid using abusive language or inciting violence, and strictly follow the agreed roadmap. He further warned against campaigning beyond 6:00 PM, advising candidates to switch off their music systems and respect campaign time limits.

Meanwhile, Rukungiri Resident District Commissioner (RDC) Mr. Bron Kikanshemeza assured candidates of equal and fair security during the campaign period. He emphasized that no one is above the law and anyone found violating electoral regulations will face appropriate action.

Kikanshemeza also cautioned candidates with personal security details, such as Maj. Gen. Jim Muhwezi and Gen. Henry Tumukunde, to ensure their bodyguards conduct themselves professionally. His remarks followed concerns from other candidates who feared that armed escorts could intimidate or disrupt their campaign activities.
