Rujumbura Residents Thank Minister Jim Muhwezi for Launching Electricity Project

Rukungiri: Residents of Rujumbura Constituency, especially from the sub-counties of Ruhinda, Buhunga, and Nyakagyeme, have expressed their appreciation to the Minister for Security, Maj. Gen. Jim Muhwezi Katugugu, for launching an electricity project in their area. They believe this project will contribute to development and boost household incomes.

This follows the recent launch of a long-awaited power line extension project in Rukungiri District by the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Development. The project is expected to greatly improve electricity access and promote economic growth in the affected sub-counties.

Funded by the Kuwait Fund for Arab Economic Development, the project has been awarded to City Harvest Contractor Limited at a cost of 7.8 billion Ugandan shillings.

According to Maj. Gen. Jim Muhwezi, who is also the Member of Parliament for Rujumbura Constituency, the launch aims to resume work in areas where poles were installed but wiring and connections were never completed.

Residents such as Yosiya Mwesigwa from Kigaga Parish, Fred Bashija from Kamurari, Gloria Keshaha from Katooma, and Doreen Kiconco expressed excitement about the project. They said they plan to start income-generating activities such as welding, salons, and coffee processing using electricity, which will help improve their livelihoods.

They also shared the challenges they have faced due to the lack of electricity—such as difficulties in charging phones and radios, and lack of lighting in homes and businesses. They thanked Minister Jim Muhwezi for the initiative and requested that he also consider extending water services to all parts of the constituency.

Minister Muhwezi assured the residents that all previously installed poles without wires will be connected before the next general elections, and that every cell will have access to electricity.
