RO 69 Col. Samson Mande Urges Students to Focus on Skills Over Certificates
Rukungiri: RO 69 Col. Samson Mande, one of the founding members of the National Resistance Army (NRA) who recently returned to Uganda after 24 years in exile, has urged students to focus on acquiring practical skills rather than concentrating solely on academic certificates.
Col. Mande, who returned from exile in Sweden this year, made the remarks on November 28, while addressing students of Immaculate Heart Girls School Nyakibale during a Leaders’ Concert held at the school located in Rukungiri Municipality.
Col. Mande, a recipient of the European Human Rights Heroes Award (2006) for his contribution to the promotion of human rights in Uganda, said God blessed Uganda with abundant resources, yet many Ugandans have failed to fully utilize them. He stressed that this challenge can only be solved if young people prioritize knowledge and skills that can transform their lives and the lives of others, instead of relying on certificates that push them to look only for office jobs rather than becoming innovative.

He further encouraged the school administration to create opportunities especially during holidays for interested students and members of the public to acquire basic hands-on skills. He also pledged to support the school once such a program is initiated.

The school headteacher, Sr. Sabina Tumusiime, reminded students that every learner is a leader, not just of tomorrow but of today. She appreciated those who showcased leadership skills and urged them to practice leadership both within and outside the school environment.
Sr. Tumusiime emphasized that true leadership requires honesty, sacrifice, responsibility, service, and character, noting that leadership is not a title but a service and a legacy.
