Retired Head Teachers Warned Against Alcoholism, Urged to Uphold Public Image

Rukungiri: Retired head teachers in Rukungiri district have been cautioned against spending much of their retirement time in local bars as daily alcohol consumers, a habit said to tarnish their image as former professionals and community role models.

The warning was issued on November 27, by the Chairperson of the Retired Teachers Association, David Turyazayo Kapiira, during a meeting held at the Rukungiri District Council Hall at the district headquarters.

While delivering his speech, Kapiira highlighted several challenges affecting retired teachers. These include delayed pensions, poor health associated with old age, shortage of labour at home, misinformation due to limited access to official communication, failure by some retired teachers to join the association, reluctance to engage in casual work, alcoholism and womanizing, poverty, and among others.

In response, the chief guest and Deputy Chief Administrative Officer, Hillary Agaba, urged the retirees to live responsibly as community role models. He encouraged them to guide the younger generation on how to live healthy and productive lives, noting with concern the rising number of young people dying in their 20s and 30s.

Agaba also appealed to the retired teachers to remain educators within their communities. On the issue of delayed pensions, he explained that government delays are due to the transition to a new payment system but assured them that every beneficiary will eventually receive their entitlement, urging them to remain patient.
