Residents Decry Poor Transport as Bridge Collapse Disrupts Lives

Kanungu: A section of residents of Kakoni Cell in Nyarugunda Parish, Kambuga Sub-county, are facing serious transport and communication challenges after the collapse of a bridge connecting Kambuga and Kirima sub-counties.

The bridge located in Kakoni cell, which broke down two years ago, has made it hard for the community to carry out daily activities, affecting education, businesses, and general movement.

The LC1 Chairperson of Kakoni Cell, Justus Byoruganda, on December10, told our reporter that the bridge was destroyed by running water due to poor construction. He claimed that materials like cement, meant for its construction, were not used properly.

A trader in Kakoni Trading Centre, Alex Muhammad Twikirize, described the dangers children face when crossing the water. He said children who used to cross safely using the bridge to attend school in Kihanda Sub-county now risk their lives using tree logs to get across.

Twikirize urged authorities to rebuild the bridge to ensure the safety of residents and restore normal life in the area.

Our reporter was unable to get a comment from the district authorities despite making calls, as they were unavailable.
