The theft occurred on Saturday, July 26, 2025, at around 8:30 PM at Rwakaraba Police Post in Nyakyishenyi Sub County. According to Kigezi Region Police Spokesperson ASP Elly Maate, Police Constable No. 83982 Muyambi Pius had reported for duty that morning and kept his rifle in his bedroom, which is adjacent to the police post counter.
At around 8:00 PM, PC Muyambi left for supper at a nearby hotel, about 60 meters away, leaving the gun inside his room. When he returned, he found the door broken and the firearm missing.

In a phone conversation with Nyakyishenyi LC3 Chairperson Wednesday Twinomujuni, the suspect, who is still on the run denied stealing the rifle, claiming he was being framed. He alleged that Arineitwe from Mukatindo and Ntare, who has allegedly been posing as a crime preventer, could be responsible.
Saturday said he had long-standing disagreements with Arineitwe, which might have led to his implication in the case.
Saturday was recently released from prison after serving a two-year sentence for stealing machines belonging to Ndago Gospel Singers a crime he also denies, saying he had bought the equipment from other people.
