Rukungiri: Police fired teargas to disperse leaders of the Forum Democratic Change (FDC) party who had converged for a meeting at their offices in Bugangari sub-county on Tuesday May 28, 2024.
As chaos ensued, the Rukungiri district FDC administrator , Coleb Musimenta and Ten other members were arrrested and taken to Bugangari police post and Rukungiri central police station respectively.
The Rubabo County FDC chairperson, Hillary Ainembabazi aka Owa work confirmed that police officers raided their office where the meeting was underway causing mayhem. However Ainembabazi blamed Police’s action to the Security minister Jim Muhwezi whom he said gave illegal orders to Rukungiri District Police Commander (DPC) SSP Musa Tibakirana.
He further stressed that they have held the same meetings in other areas of the district without any interference but the one in Bugangari was disrupted because of the Minister’s interest in the area.
Betty Bamukwatsa Muzanira, the former Rukungiri district Woman Member of parliament described police actions as abuse of human rights. She said some people who were arrested had come to the trading centre for some shopping.
Muzanira condemned the act and advised police to do their work as it should be instead of going beyond their mandate.
When contacted, the Rukungiri District Police Commander(DPC) SSP Musa Tibakirana refused to comment on the matter.
