Police Investigate Kidnap and Robbery of Student Carrying UGX 31.8 Million in Rukungiri

Rukungiri: The Territorial Police in Rukungiri District are actively investigating a concerning case involving the alleged kidnap and aggravated robbery of Daniel Atwine, a 24-year-old student and resident of Kitanda Cell, Nyakaina Parish, Buyanja Sub-County, Rukungiri District.

The incident occurred on 20th January, 2025, at approximately 11:00 AM along Republic Road in Rukungiri Town. Atwine, who works at Super Vet Drug Shop, was reportedly on his way to deposit UGX 31,850,000 when a white Toyota Wish vehicle, registration number UBH 905Y, intercepted him.

According to a press briefing by the Kigezi Region Police Spokesperson ASP Elly Maate, the vehicle had three unidentified occupants, one of whom was dressed in a camouflage khaki uniform resembling that of the Uganda Police. The suspects forcibly grabbed Atwine, pushed him into the car, and sped off.

While in transit, the assailants robbed Atwine of the cash and his Tecno Spark 5 mobile phone. He was later abandoned in Bushenyi District.

The incident was promptly reported, and the case was registered at CPS Rukungiri. The vehicle used in the crime, a Toyota Wish with registration number UBH 905Y, has been blacklisted through ICT (CCTV) surveillance systems to aid in tracking the culprits.
