Parents Urged to Support Hiring Night Watchmen to Protect School Property

Rukungiri: Parents have been urged to work closely with school head teachers to hire night watchmen as a way of preventing the theft of lightning arrestors and other school property.

This call was made on April 4, by the Chairperson of Head teacher’s Salary Twinomugisha, in Buyanja Sub-county, Rukungiri District, during an interview with our news reporter.

Twinomugisha revealed that unknown individuals, often from outside Buyanja, sneak into schools at night and steal lightning arrestors. In some cases, they also take small bells and padlocks from school compounds.

He further noted that in some schools, the thieves have gone as far as stealing teller phones devices used by students, teachers, and staff members to report emergencies and incidents within the school environment.

Twinomugisha warned that stealing lightning arrestors is a dangerous act, especially since their absence can put pupils’ lives at risk in the event of lightningstrikes.

Adding to the message, Charles Karahukayo, the Councilor for Nyabitete Parish in Buyanja Sub-county, revealed that a lightning arrestor was recently stolen from Kanombe Primary School. He added that the same group attempted to steal from Buhandagazi Nursery and Primary School offices but failed after discovering the school did not have a lightning arrestor installed.

Karahukayo emphasized the need for head teachers to ensure security at their schools by hiring night watchmen, reminding them that these devices are often bought by parents, and therefore must be protected.
