Parents Urged to Invest in Children’s Hand Skills for a Better Future
Rukungiri: Parents have been encouraged to invest in their children’s hand skills as a way to secure a better future for them.
This message was delivered on October 10, by the Rukungiri District Education Officer, Jackson Turyahumura, during a Parents Teachers Association (PTA) meeting at Rukungiri Technical Institute Kyamakanda, located in Buyanja Town Council.
Turyahumura, who was the guest of honor, urged parents to regularly follow up on their children’s discipline and performance at school. He emphasized the importance of hand skills, noting that practical training equips learners with essential competencies that enhance their employability and adaptability in today’s world.
He also advised students to concentrate on their studies, saying that having personal skills can help them start their own businesses. Turyahumura further urged parents to offer guidance and counseling to their children instead of leaving that responsibility entirely to teachers.
The principal of Rukungiri Technical Institute Kyamakanda, Ronald Jack Asiimwe, explained that the purpose of the meeting was to sensitize parents about the new TVET Act reforms, which have brought a paradigm shift in training, assessment, and policy implementation. He stressed that parents need to monitor their children’s class attendance and academic performance and cooperate closely with teachers to help learners stay focused.
Asiimwe also encouraged parents to set a good example for their children by avoiding alcohol consumption.
The North Kigezi Diocesan Education Coordinator, Rev. Muturivu Shabaruhanga, urged parents to prioritize their children’s education, especially for girls, describing it as a fundamental right and a key factor in personal and social development. He also advised students to work hard and reconcile with their parents, reminding them that parental blessings are vital for their success.
