Old Students Commend Bishop Onesmus for Reviving Church-Founded Schools

Rukungiri: Old students of Makobore High School, under their umbrella body, the Makobore Old Students Association (MOSA), have commended the Bishop of North Kigezi Diocese, Rt. Rev. Onesmus Asiimwe, for his tireless support towards church-founded schools, especially Makobore High School and Kinyasano Girls High School schools they say were once on the verge of collapse.

The alumni on April 12 expressed their gratitude while inaugurating a 3D metallic signpost at the entrance of Rukungiri town, near the gate of North Kigezi Diocese Health Center IV Rugarama, Rukungiri Municipality.

Speaking on behalf of the association, MOSA Vice Chairperson Edison Mpirime thanked Bishop Onesmus for his consistent campaign during pastoral visits across the Diocese, where he urged parents to trust and support Diocesan schools by sending their children there.

Mpirime revealed that due to the Bishop’s efforts, the schools have seen a tremendous revival. Previously, Kinyasano Girls High School had fewer than 400 students, and Makobore High School had fewer than 150 students. Today, Kinyasano Girls High School has 903 students, while Makobore High School has over 700 students.

The Head teacher of Makobore High School, Gad Arinaitwe, emphasized the strong cooperation between the school administration, management committees, and the North Kigezi Diocese foundation body, which has greatly contributed to the school’s turnaround.

In a speech delivered on his behalf by Denis Mwesigwa, the Deputy Head teacher in charge of Administration, Arinaitwe appreciated Bishop Onesmus for his efforts in lobbying support for both Makobore High School and Kinyasano Girls. He also commended the Old Students for their unwavering support and for not forgetting the school that shaped their lives.

Gracing the occasion as Chief Guest, the aspiring Member of Parliament for Rukungiri Municipality Hon. Counsel Isaac Atukunda, reaffirmed the commitment of Old Students to support their former schools as a sign of appreciation for the role education has played in their lives.

Counsel Atukunda revealed that alumni are currently sponsoring over 40 students, offering both full and half bursaries to support access to education.

On his part, the Bishop of North Kigezi Diocese, Rt. Rev. Onesmus Asiimwe, emphasized that education is the greatest gift parents can offer their children, as it creates equality among all people regardless of background.

Bishop Onesmus noted that the Diocese, together with the government, has provided the necessary support to church-founded schools. What remains, he said, is accountability from staff and students especially in the areas of discipline and academic performance.

He challenged Makobore High School to shed its past reputation, once known for indiscipline, strikes, and demonstrations, and prove that it is now a transformed institution known for excellence.
