Nyakishenyi residents contribute funds to acquire water after gov’t neglect.

Rukungiri: Leaders and residents of Nyakyishenyi sub-county in Rukungiri district have taken up the task of solving the problem of water scarcity which has hit their area after several attempts to get help from government remained unsuccessful.

According to leaders, the only existing gravity flow scheme in their sub-county, which was donated by the Diocese of Kigezi through Rev. Canon Basingwire, had sources in Kinyankobe village of  Murama Parish, and Nyabyirengye village of Katonya Parish.

Although this project was well-constructed and supplied water to several areas, it stopped at Mukagana Trading Center, leaving parts of Kyondo, Nyamabare, Makyiro, and other areas without water access.

Now as a way of extending this water project, residents from 203 households of Omukagana, agreed to pay 20,000 shillings per household, raising a total of 6 million shillings.

In a phone interview on Thursday July 4, 2024 with our reporter, Wednesday Twinomujuni, the LCIII Chairperson for Nyakyishenyi sub-county, expressed their intention to give water to unserved areas and other facilities such as Nyakyishenyi Secondary School and Revival Church.

Twinomujuni as a way of expressing commitment to the implementation of this project has already contributed 2 million shillings.

He called on other leaders and well wishers to support the residents  efforts by providing water pipes, tap stands, and financial assistance.

Twinomujuni says they now need an additional 3 million shillings to complete the project.

He told our reporter that despite reaching out to the government through the water department at Rukungiri District, they were informed that there were no available funds to assist them.
