Nyakishenyi Leaders Decry Poor State of Central Government Road

Rukungiri: The central government has failed to maintain its road in Nyakishenyi Sub County, which is currently in a worse state compared to community access roads.

The road, which connects Rukungiri and Kanungu districts, passing through Kisizi, Bikongozo, Rwanyondo, and Kabaranga in Nyakishenyi Sub County, has deteriorated further during the rainy season. This road falls under the Ministry of Works and Transport, but maintenance efforts remain absent.

Speaking to our news reporter on March 31, at Leisure Gardens Hotel in Nyakishenyi, the LC3 Chairperson for Nyakishenyi Sub County, Wednesday Twinomujuni, revealed that local authorities have repeatedly informed the Ministry of Works through the district engineer, but no action has been taken for a long time.

He explained that due to the poor state of the road, heavy vehicles transporting goods such as charcoal, coffee, and timber no longer pass through the sub county. He pointed out critical sections in dire condition, including Kyondo in Rwanyondo Parish, Makyiro, Murama Trading Centre, and Kabaranga at the district border with Kanungu. He also highlighted a large pothole in Makyiro village, which poses a serious risk to road users.

Twinomujuni further stated that despite visits from district authorities and a representative from the Uganda National Roads Authority (UNRA), nothing has been done beyond empty promises.

He called on leaders, including Rubabo County MP Hon. Naboth Namanya and Rukungiri Woman MP Midius Kaharata, to push for urgent intervention by the Ministry of Works and Transport.

Twinomujuni praised the Rukungiri District Local Government for ensuring that roads maintained at the district, sub county, and community levels are in better condition compared to the central government-managed road.

Efforts to get a comment from UNRA’s Kigezi Sub regional Station Manager, Allison Abenawe, were unsuccessful, as she did not respond to repeated calls from our news reporter.
