Mob Kills Escaped Robbery Suspect in Kisoro District.

Kisoro: Police in Kisoro District are investigating the murder of a 37-year-old man, Irankunda Desire, who was killed by a mob after escaping from hospital where he was under police guard.

According to Kigezi Regional Police Spokesperson, ASP Elly Maate, the incident happened on the night of June 4, 2025 at around 10:00 pm in Bupfumfu village, Rwaramba parish, Nyakinama sub-county.

Irankunda had earlier been arrested on May 13, 2025 along with five others on charges of aggravated robbery. On May 20, the group was transferred to Mbarara Central Police Station by the Flying Squad to help with investigations into other robbery cases in the western region.They were later brought back to Kisoro on May 29.

However, upon return, Irankunda reportedly developed health complications and was admitted to Kisoro Police Health Centre. His condition worsened, and on June 2, 2025, he was referred to Kisoro General Hospital.

ASP Maate said two officers were assigned to guard him—D/C Ronald Masereka during the day and D/C Alex Musinguzi at night. Masereka handed over to Musinguzi at 6:00 pm on June 4. However, at around 9:00 pm, Musinguzi reported that the suspect had escaped from the hospital.

A search was launched, but at around 10:00 pm the same night, residents in Bupfumfu village spotted Irankunda and beat him to death.

Police visited and documented the crime scene, and the body was taken to Kisoro General Hospital for postmortem. A case of murder by mob action has been opened as investigations continue.
