Ministers Jim Muhwezi, Matia Kasaija Announce Final Term as They Pick NRM Nomination Forms
Politics: Two senior government ministers, Retired Major General Jim Muhwezi Katugugu and Finance Minister Matia Kasaija, have declared that the 2026 general elections will mark their final term in active politics.
The two long-serving legislators made the announcement on June 4, as they picked up their expression of interest forms from the National Resistance Movement (NRM) Electoral Commission offices in Kampala.
Gen. Jim Muhwezi, who represents Rujumbura Constituency in Rukungiri District, and Kasaija, the Member of Parliament for Buyanja County in Kibaale District, confirmed their intention to run on the NRM ticket but maintained that this will be their last term serving their constituencies.
Both ministers have been political heavyweights for decades, playing influential roles in Uganda’s cabinet and parliamentary affairs.

Meanwhile, 86-year-old Second Deputy Prime Minister, General (Rtd) Moses Ali, has also picked up nomination forms to seek re-election as Member of Parliament for Adjumani West County under the NRM. Due to his advanced age and health considerations, party officials delivered the forms to him through the window of his vehicle.
Born in 1939, Gen. Moses Ali remains one of the most senior figures in the NRM and Uganda’s broader political landscape.
