Minister Jim Muhwezi Assures Rukungiri Residents on Queen Elizabeth National Park Fencing.

Rukungiri: The Minister for Security, Hon. Major General Jim Muhwezi Katugugu, who also serves as the area Member of Parliament for Rujumbura Constituency in Rukungiri District, has assured the public that the fencing of Queen Elizabeth National Park is ongoing and that the Rukungiri side will soon be covered.

He made these remarks during a recent engagement with journalists at his home in Kagunga Cell, Nyakagyeme Sub-county, Rukungiri District.

Minister Muhwezi revealed that a team from the Uganda Wildlife Authority (UWA), together with State Minister for Tourism Martin Mugarra Bahinduka, had recently visited the area and confirmed the government’s commitment to fence the park to protect residents from frequent disturbances caused by wild animals.

He said the electric fence construction started from the Democratic Republic of Congo side and has already progressed past Kanungu District on the Ugandan side.

Minister Jim stated that the fence will cover around 11 kilometers and will extend up to Mitooma District and that once the construction is complete, residents will be safe from wild animals such as elephants, monkeys, and others that have been destroying gardens, attacking domestic animals, and threatening lives.
