Metropolitan International University Holds Vibrant Cultural Gala in Mbarara
Mbarara: Metropolitan International University (MIU) has held its 2025 cultural gala competitions at the university’s Mbarara campus, bringing together students from its three campuses, Mbarara, Kampala, and Kisoro to celebrate Uganda’s diverse heritage.
The event featured colorful performances from various cultural groups including the Banyankore, Banyoro, Batooro, Basoga, Baganda, Bakonjo, Bagwere, Bakiga and Bafumbira, among others.
Speaking at the event on October 26, the Mbarara campus director, Sarah Akampurira, appreciated all the teams that participated, noting that this was the second joint cultural gala organized under the university’s new approach of combining all campuses. She said the joint gala has significantly improved participation, unity, and cultural exchange among students.
The guest of honor, Moses Asiimwe Bakyene, who is the Chairperson of the Association for Secondary Schools in Buhweju District and represented the District Education Officer, commended MIU for organizing such an event. He observed that many primary and secondary schools have abandoned subjects related to music, dance, and drama, yet such activities are vital for preserving Uganda’s cultural values.
Bakyene encouraged the youth to take pride in their heritage and work hard to promote their traditions, especially in regions without established kingdoms where cultural practices risk being forgotten.
The function concluded with the awarding of the best-performing individuals and cultural groups in various categories, amid cheers and jubilation from students and guests.
