Masya Parish Residents Demand Electricity to Spur Development

Rukungiri: Residents of Masya Parish in Nyakagyeme Sub-county, Rukungiri District, have expressed frustration over the lack of electricity, which they say is hindering the development of their area.

According to the interviews conducted by our reporter on December 10, Many residents report that they are forced to rely on costly alternatives such as solar panels, batteries, generators, kerosene lamps, and candles. These alternatives not only increase expenses but also pose safety risks.

A resident of Munyeganyegye Cell, Billy Bakehemura, voiced his disappointment, noting that electric poles were installed in 2017. Residents initially hoped they would soon have access to electricity, but delays have shattered those expectations.

The LC1 Chairperson of Nyabugando cell Edison Kahesha, said the absence of electricity has stalled development in their area. He explained that potential investors and businesses, including factories, have relocated to towns with better infrastructure.

Kahesha urged district authorities and the area Member of Parliament to address the issue promptly to boost local development.

The councilor for Masya Parish and speaker of Nyakagyeme Sub-county Obed Mayanja, highlighted that Masya is the only parish in the sub-county without electricity. He said he has raised the issue with various district offices but has received no response.

Mayanja warned that residents are considering protests to voice their frustration. He appealed to district authorities and UMEME to resolve the issue before tensions escalate.
