Manchester United Fans Donate Scholastic Materials to Support Pupils in Rukungiri
Rukungiri: As the Lent period continues, Manchester United fans under the Rukungiri District Chapter have today March 26, donated scholastic materials to selected primary schools in the district to support needy learners.
The donated materials included exercise books, mathematical sets, pens, rulers, pencils, and erasers.
According to the chapter chairperson, Zepha Karyija Byaruhanga, the beneficiary schools were Kanombe Primary School in Buyanja Sub-county (Rubabo Constituency), Katwekamwe and Bihinga Primary Schools in Rukungiri Municipality, and Kanyankyende Primary School in Bugangari Sub-county (Rujumbura Constituency).
The items were specifically given to Primary Six and Primary Seven pupils to support their academic work, especially as they prepare for the Primary Leaving Examinations (PLE) later this year.
Byaruhanga noted that this is an annual charity activity carried out during the Lent season. He added that in 2025, the group donated church desks to Christ the King Catholic Parish and All Saints Church of Uganda, both in Rukungiri Municipality. In 2024, they donated food items such as posho and clothes to vulnerable people, and also supported the construction of a house for a needy family in Bwambara Sub-county.
Speaking at the event, Manchester United fan John Bosco Twesigomwe, who is also the Rukungiri Municipality Principal Community Development Officer (PCDO), said the donation is a sign of unity and solidarity among members, not necessarily wealth.
He explained that scholastic materials are costly for some parents, which affects learners’ performance. He said the support will help pupils concentrate on their studies and prepare well for their final examinations.
Twesigomwe also urged other football fans to go beyond supporting European clubs and instead use their shared passion to unite and support their communities through similar initiatives.
