Limited Equipment Delays Road Repairs in Rukungiri District
Rukungiri: The lack of sufficient road maintenance machines has hindered the smooth progress of road works in Rukungiri District.
The district’s civil engineer Nicholas Karuhanga, revealed this on January 13, during an interview with our reporter from his office at the district headquarters.
Karuhanga explained that the entire district has only one machine to refurbish its roads. He attributed this equipment shortage to delays in completing scheduled road repairs.
Karuhanga noted that in the second quarter of the 2024/2025 financial year, the district had planned to refurbish four major roads: Ruhinda-Rwengiri Road (6.3 km), Kisiizi-Nyarurambi-Kaamaga Road (10.4 km), Nyabushenyi-Mineera Road (5.6 km), and Ruhinda-Rwengiri Road (5.6 km). However, due to the equipment challenges, only the Bikurungu-Kakoni Road has been completed, while work on the other roads remains pending.
He also cautioned residents against digging or living along road reserves, emphasizing that such activities damage roads and ruin them even after rehabilitation.
Karuhanga also urged residents to remain patient as the district works on plans to refurbish dilapidated roads and improve the transport sector.
