Leaders Destroy Over One Hectare of Marijuana in Buyanja Sub county
Rukungiri: Local leaders in Buyanja Sub county, Rukungiri District, have cut and burnt down more than one hectare of marijuana that was being cultivated in Rwenanura cell, Nyabiteete parish.
The plantation allegedly belonged to a prominent journalist and former radio show host linked to a Rukungiri-based radio station.
This action followed concerns raised by a parent of a youth identified as Martin Twesiga. On May 26, Parents reported that Twesiga’s behavior had changed drastically due to drug use, and that the marijuana garden was influencing other children in the area, leading to increased drug abuse and theft.
The district councilor representing Buyanja Sub-county Albert Mugisha Rwamugata, said Twesiga had convinced his parents to give him land for productive farming, but instead used it to grow marijuana.

The LC1 chairperson of Rwenanura cell Eliab Tugume, said he mobilized residents to destroy the marijuana garden after receiving several complaints from Twesiga’s parents and other villagers. He revealed that a group of people had been gathering in the bush where the marijuana was grown, stealing and cooking food like bananas and hens.
He added that the community has been reporting increasing cases of coffee and animal theft, which they believe are connected to drug abuse and alcoholism in the area.
