Kisoro MP Aids Suspects’ Escape from Police

Kisoro: The territorial police in Kisoro district are investigating a shocking incident in which Hon. John Kamara Nzeyimana, a Member of Parliament for Bufumbira County North, allegedly aided the escape of suspects from police custody.

The suspects had been arrested in connection with a case of arson and malicious damage to property.

According to Kigezi Regional Police Spokesperson Elly Maate, the incident occurred on Monday, July 28, 2025, at around 2:00 PM at Kisoro Central Police Station.

The suspects—Gasigwa Jeremiah, Harerimana Augustine, Nkurunziza Apollo, Bavuzayubusa Paskazia, Mujawimana Dinavance, and Basekuye Teleza—had been apprehended following investigations into the burning and destruction of property belonging to one Mahoro Jackline.

The incident reportedly stemmed from a village dispute on May 3, 2025.Police say that after summons were issued, the suspects allegedly sought counsel from Hon. Kamara, who reportedly discouraged them from honoring the police summons. Despite this, police managed to arrest the group and bring them in for statements.

However, drama unfolded shortly after their detention when Hon. Kamara showed up at the station and requested bond for the suspects. He was advised by the District CID Officer, D/ASP Babiiha Johnson, that the suspects needed to first record statements due to the seriousness of the matter.

Hon. Kamara reportedly left the station in anger. Moments later, while the suspects were being interviewed by the investigating officer, he returned and allegedly instructed the suspects to flee.

They entered his vehicle, and he drove off with them, forcibly pushing away the officer who tried to intervene.

The incident was immediately reported to the Officer in Charge of the station, SP Tuhairwe Alex, and to the District CID Officer.

A follow-up operation was conducted, and all the suspects were re-arrested from the home of Hon. Kamara. However, police were unable to arrest the MP himself as he had allegedly mobilized members of the community to resist police efforts.

“Inquiries are underway,” Maate stated. “Imagine a person of his caliber—a legislator—violating the very laws he is mandated to uphold.

It is a stark reminder that no one is above the law.”Efforts to apprehend Hon. Kamara are ongoing, and police have vowed to bring all perpetrators to justice.
