Kashenyi Secondary School Holds Sports Day to Develop Student Talent

Rukungiri: Students of Kashenyi Secondary School in Ruhinda, Rukungiri District, held a vibrant sports day filled with various activities including athletes, relays, and field events.

The event took place on June 5, at Kashenyi playground in Ruhinda Sub-county. During an interview with our news reporter, the head teacher, Rev. Ivan Mwongyera, said students participated in events such as 100 meters, 300 meters, relays, and field activities like shot put for both boys and girls.

Rev. Mwongyera explained that the purpose of the sports day was to help students develop their talents and give every child a chance to express themselves, build confidence, and prepare for a better future. He added that such activities also serve as preparation for upcoming district athletics competitions.

He encouraged parents to support their children in sports, noting that talent can open doors for them, including opportunities like scholarships or paying their school fees through sports.

The school’s sports coach Mackbess Akakwasa, pointed out several challenges they face during training. He noted that the training field is too small only 320 meters instead of the standard 400 meters which affects student performance. He emphasized the importance of exposing students to real competitions to fully explore their potential.

Coach Akakwasa also mentioned that some parents are not supportive when they hear their children are participating in sports. Additionally, a few teachers also fail to support sports activities, which makes their work harder.

He further noted the lack of basic facilities such as nearby toilets at the playground, which causes time wastage. He called for improved support, including providing students with essentials like water and glucose during sports activities.
