Kashenyi Secondary School Holds Debate Competitions Ahead of Rukungiri District Championships
Rukungiri: Kashenyi Secondary School in Ruhinda Subcounty, Rukungiri District, has conducted internal debate competitions in preparation for the upcoming Rukungiri District Debate Championships.
According to Robert Byamukama, the teacher in charge of debates at the school, the competitions began with stream-level contests before advancing to inter-class debates. The final round, which concluded on March 1, saw Senior Six emerge as the overall winners, followed by Senior Four in second place.
Each class was represented by three students, except for the candidate classes Senior Four and Senior Six which had six representatives each. In total, 24 students participated, forming eight teams.
The school awarded the winning class team with gold medals and a trophy, while the second-place team received silver medals. Additionally, the best speaker from Senior One and the overall best speaker from all participants received certificates.
This initiative aims to prepare students for competitions at the district, regional, national, and international levels. Kashenyi Secondary School last year represented Uganda at the Pan-African Debate Championships in South Africa.
Speaking to our news reporter, the school’s headteacher, Rev. Ivan Mwongyera, emphasized that such debate competitions equip learners with essential skills that will benefit them in their future careers. He highlighted communication, argument development, and fluency in English as key skills gained through debating.

The Education Coordinator for North Kigezi Diocese Rev. Muntrive Nshabaruhanga, also praised the initiative, noting that it enhances students’ public speaking abilities. He encouraged those who did not participate in the debate club to join other extracurricular activities such as Scripture Union, Scouts, and sports, rather than remaining passive observers.
