Kankwasa Lestah Dies After Long Battle With Diabetes, Leaves Behind 7 Children
Rukungiri: Kankwasa Lestah, a 45-year-old mother of seven who was abandoned by her husband, has died after battling diabetes for over 25 years.
Kankwasa lived a life of hardship, having been left helpless and in deep poverty, with none of her children able to attend school due to lack of support.
During the burial ceremony on June 21, her mother, Buradina Ndyabangira, expressed deep pain and frustration over the abandonment her daughter suffered. She revealed that Kankwasa’s husband denied ever being married to her and instructed the family not to call him in the event of her death. Buradina’s words reflected the emotional distress the family has endured due to neglect and rejection.

Speaking at the same function, the Buyanja Sub-county Chairperson, Agaba Emmy Rubondo, noted that family-related cases are increasingly overwhelming his office. He condemned the practice of parents involving children in marital conflicts, urging families to protect the wellbeing of their children during disputes.
Rubondo advised Kankwasa’s family to find ways to care for the seven orphaned children or to seek assistance from his office. He further called on men to be responsible fathers by providing basic needs for their children and ensuring their welfare, regardless of relationship issues with their partners.
