Immaculate Heart Girls and Centenary Bank Strengthen Ties Through Sports
Rukungiri: Centenary Bank Rukungiri branch staff drew 2-2 with Immaculate Heart Girls School Nyakibale staff in a football friendly match held at the school’s playground in Southern Division, Rukungiri Municipality.
The sports event also featured a volleyball match between the staff of the two institutions. Immaculate Heart Girls School staff won the volleyball game 2 sets to 0. In the tug of war, both teams ended in a draw, with each side winning one pull.
Athletics races for 200 metres were also held for both male and female participants, adding more excitement to the event.
Speaking after the event on October 5, The Manager of Centenary Bank Rukungiri branch, Brian Kasaija, encouraged the public to embrace sports, stating that it is not only an economic activity but also a vital way to prevent diseases. He emphasized the importance of physical activity in maintaining good health and reducing the risk of non-communicable diseases.
“Sports promote physical fitness and help prevent diseases associated with a lack of exercise,” he said while addressing students and staff of Immaculate Heart Girls School Nyakibale.

The Assistant Manager of Centenary Bank Rukungiri Mark Muhwezi, also highlighted the health benefits of sports. He noted that regular physical activity helps prevent and manage diseases such as heart disease, diabetes, stroke, and certain cancers. He thanked the management of Immaculate Heart for organizing the event and for their continued partnership with the bank.
The Deputy Headteacher of Immaculate Heart Girls School, Sister Grace Mary Naturinda, appreciated Centenary Bank for the initiative. She expressed hope that the relationship between the school and the bank will continue to grow and benefit both parties.
She also encouraged students preparing for final exams to study hard and advised other school heads to support their learners in achieving academic success.
The school’s chaplain, Rev Father Mugabe Cleophasi, urged fellow religious leaders from all faiths to spare time for physical exercise in their busy schedules as a way of maintaining their health and preventing lifestyle diseases.

The Assistant Games Teacher at Immaculate Heart Girls School, Michael Ahereeza, added that sports can serve as an economic opportunity. He explained that developing sports talents to national or international levels can reduce unemployment in Uganda. He also noted that sports teach discipline, build friendships, and create opportunities for both personal and community development.
