IGP Byakagaba Promises More Security for Rukungiri Ahead of Elections
Rukungiri: The Inspector General of Police (IGP), Abas Byakagaba, has promised to deploy more security personnel, police and water motor vehicles, and motorcycles in Rukungiri district to boost security during the upcoming elections.
This was revealed on July 11, by the Resident District Commissioner (RDC), Steven Nsubuga Bewayo, in an interview with our reporter after a closed-door meeting held at the Rukungiri District Council Hall. The meeting was attended by IGP Byakagaba, NRM parliamentary aspirants, and the District Security Committee.
RDC Nsubuga addressed claims that Rukungiri is on fire due to the political rivalry between two generals, Maj. Gen. Jim Muhwezi Katugugu, the Minister for Security, and retired Gen. Henry Tumukunde. He clarified that both are contesting in different constituencies and assured the public that Rukungiri remains calm and secure.

He called for additional deployment, possibly even from the Uganda People’s Defence Forces (UPDF), to ensure peace and order.
Hon. Rutahirwa noted that Rukungiri district, particularly during this electoral season, requires heightened security and surveillance due to increasing cases of voter intimidation. He thanked the IGP for visiting the area at such a critical time.
