Hon. Isaac Atukunda Donates Maize Seedlings to Support Rukungiri Residents

Rukungiri: The Hopeful Member of Parliament for Rukungiri Municipality Hon. Isaac Atukunda has donated 2,000 kg of maize seedlings to the residents of Rukungiri Municipality.

The distribution launch event took place on April 12, at his home in Kyatoko Ward, Eastern Division, where local leaders and coordinators received seeds and will also be responsible for distributing them to each household.

Hon. Atukunda explained his decision to donate maize seedlings instead of relief food, such as posho, stating that this approach aims to eliminate poverty and enhance household income in the community. He noted that the area had been affected by hailstorms that damaged crops, and providing seedlings offers a long-term solution. By planting these seeds, families can grow their own food and generate income, rather than relying on food that can be consumed quickly.

He urged the public not to sell the maize seeds or use them for food but to plant them for future benefits. Atukunda also requested local leaders and coordinators to ensure a fair distribution of the seedlings.

Councilor Silvia Arinetiwe from Kyatoko Ward, along with Councilor Shillah Musiimenta from Kyatoko South and Minister for Works and Production for Rukungiri Municipality Johnson Kapesha, expressed their gratitude to Hon. Atukunda for his generous donation. They highlighted how the seeds would help families recover from the effects of the hailstorm by providing sustenance and income for essential expenses, such as school fees and debt repayment.

Residents noted that previous food donations often lasted only a few days, while these seeds have the potential to produce a significant harvest, with each kg capable of yielding 50 to 100 kg of maize.
