Headteachers in Buyanja Sub-county Appeal for More Support to Improve Education

Rukungiri: The Chairperson of the Headteachers Association in Buyanja Sub-county, Salary Beinomugisha, has raised concerns about the challenges facing schools in the area. Speaking in an interview October 3, Beinomugisha revealed that the sub-county has 18 primary schools, but none of them have enough desks, which has negatively impacted learning.

He added that schools are also struggling with a lack of quality latrines, textbooks, and enough teachers in some institutions. The situation has been worsened by parents being unable to provide food and other basic requirements for their children due to last month’s hailstorm that destroyed their crops.

Beinomugisha called on the government to address these issues to improve the quality of education for learners. He also thanked the government for the support it has already provided to help children access education.

He urged parents to continue supporting their schools, saying that their contribution is essential to complement the government’s efforts to deliver quality education.

Last month, the sub-county leadership, together with its council, provided desks to four primary schools: Kishonga, Kagati, Bugyera, and Rubanga. However, school authorities say the desks are still insufficient and have called on both the central and local government to provide more support.

When our reporter attempted to get a comment from the Rukungiri District education authorities, it was not possible as the Principal Inspector of Schools, Lydia Tushemerirwe, declined to comment.
