Gen. Henry Tumukunde Wins NRM Flag for Rukungiri Municipality MP Race

Rukungiri: Gen. Henry Tumukunde has been declared the winner of the NRM primaries for Rukungiri Municipality Member of Parliament, securing the party’s flag ahead of the 2026 general elections.

Tumukunde emerged victorious with 4,517 votes, representing 45.6%, defeating the incumbent MP Hon. Dr. Elisa Rutahirwa, who garnered 2,843 votes (28.7%).

The results were announced early this morning at 5:20 a.m. on July 18, by the Rukungiri NRM District Elections Officer, Wright Mwongyera, at the tally center located in the Rukungiri District Council Hall. Vote counting for other positions, such as Member of Parliament for Rujumbura and Rubabo constituencies, as well as Woman Member of Parliament, was still ongoing at the time of filing this report.

Other candidates included Isaac Atukunda, who got 1,658 votes (16.7%), Andrew Ankunda Kikira with 736 votes (7.4%), Nathan Kamugisha Akandwanaho with 101 votes (1.0%), and Kabano Apolo who came last with 49 votes (0.5%).

According to Mwongyera, the total number of valid votes cast was 9,905. The declaration form was handed over to Tumukunde’s representative, George Owakukiroru.
