Former Rwenzururu Royal Guard Surrenders After Eight Years in Hiding

Kasese: A 60-year-old former Royal Guard of the Obusinga Bwa Rwenzururu has surrendered to the government after spending eight years in hiding.

Joseph Kabalhami, who says he was the commander of all Royal Guards in Greater Lake Katwe Sub-county, surrendered on Tuesday evening at his home in Kalhamya village, Kahokya Sub-county, Kasese district. He was received by Zepher Mubingwa, the Deputy Resident District Commissioner (DRDC) in charge of Busongora County.

Kabalhami recalled that on November 27, 2016, he fled along with 79 female Royal Guards following the raid on the Rwenzururu Kingdom’s palace by security forces. They have since been living in hiding with relatives. He confirmed that all 80 individuals including himself, have now returned home and reunited with their families.

He appealed to the government for a warm reception and support in rebuilding their lives. He also thanked those who helped them during their time in hiding by providing food and other necessities.

In response, Mubingwa welcomed Kabalhami and directed the Gombolola Internal Security Officer (GISO) and the Sub-county NRM Chairperson to profile all the returnees and submit their details to the RDC’s office for further guidance.
