Court Denies Bail to Alex Waiswa Mufumbiro, Blocking Him from Attending Wife’s Burial
National: A court in Kampala has today April 10, denied bail to National Unity Platform (NUP) deputy spokesperson Alex Waiswa Mufumbiro, meaning he will not attend the burial of his wife.
Mufumbiro had applied for bail so he could attend the burial of his wife, Edith Katende Mufumbiro, who recently died of cancer. However, Grade One Magistrate Doreen Ahimbisibwe rejected the request.
His lawyers, family, and NUP members had gathered at Kanyanya Magistrates Court hoping he would be released temporarily. When the court denied bail, his legal team protested and refused to continue appearing before another magistrate, Damali Agumasiimwe, where he faces separate charges.
The defence team, including Joel Ssenyonyi, Samuel Muyizzi, and Alex Luganda, criticized the court process. They said access to court was restricted and security was tight. They also noted that Mufumbiro appeared in court through a video link instead of being brought physically.
During the hearing, the defence presented Mufumbiro’s father as a surety. However, the prosecution objected, saying he was too elderly to guarantee his son’s return to court.
Elias Nalukoola Luyimbazi Balimwezo was also rejected as a surety. The court ruled that he was not close enough to the accused to ensure he would follow bail conditions.
Magistrate Ahimbisibwe agreed with the prosecution and denied the bail application. This decision angered the defence team, who said it raises serious concerns about fairness and justice.
Meanwhile, the body of Edith Katende Mufumbiro has been taken to Luzira Church of Uganda for prayers and will later be transported to Busiiro County for burial.
This means Mufumbiro will miss both the vigil and the burial of his wife. Joel Ssenyonyi described the situation as very painful, saying Mufumbiro has been denied the chance to bury his own wife.
