Bishop Onesmus Asiimwe Warns Against Self-Proclaimed Pastors Misleading Christians

Rukungiri: The Bishop of North Kigezi Diocese, Rt. Rev. Onesmus Asiimwe, has urged Ugandans to be vigilant and differentiate between genuine servants of God and self-proclaimed pastors.

In an interview with our reporter over the weekend at his office at Emmanuel Cathedral, Kinyasano, Rukungiri District, Bishop Asiimwe expressed concern over individuals starting churches as a way to earn an income rather than genuinely serving God.

He noted that some people perceive pastoral work as lucrative, leading to an increase in unqualified individuals establishing churches. The Bishop highlighted alarming scenarios in some of these churches, including pastors beating followers for missing Sunday services, forcing them to eat grass, or selling items like sodas while claiming the products would bring blessings. Other pastors promote products such as rice, water, and pens as sources of divine favor.

Bishop Asiimwe cautioned Christians to avoid leaders who start churches to seek wealth, respect, or out of conflicts with their previous church leaders. He also criticized individuals who mimic the Anglican faith by wearing purple and red vestments to create a resemblance.

He advised Christians to remain in the churches their grandparents attended, such as the Roman Catholic Church, the Anglican Church (Church of Uganda), Islam, or recognized Pentecostal churches.

The Bishop called for discernment among Ugandans, urging them to prioritize spiritual growth over being misled by false prophets.
