Bishop Onesimus Asiimwe Decries Low Male Church Attendance, Urges Spiritual Renewal and Family Responsibility
Rukungiri: The Bishop of North Kigezi Diocese, Rt Rev Onesimus Asiimwe, has expressed concern over the declining number of men attending church, even as crime rates involving men continue to rise.
Bishop Asiimwe made the remarks on July 25, during a special retreat for men held at the diocesan headquarters on Kinyasano Hill in Rukungiri Municipality. The retreat was aimed at encouraging men to reflect on their spiritual and family responsibilities.
He noted that many men have abandoned church activities and instead spend most of their time in bars drinking alcohol, leaving women to handle both church and family duties. He emphasized the need for men to return to church, repent, and actively participate in giving offerings as part of their spiritual growth.
Bishop Asiimwe also urged men to work hand in hand with their wives in raising children and building strong families rooted in faith, instead of engaging in domestic conflicts.

During the same event, the Fathers’ Union President of the Church of Uganda, Samuel Bakutana, challenged men to lead their families by example and demonstrate good leadership that can earn them respect from their children and the wider community.
He pointed out that many men have surrendered their leadership roles to women, which has led to mockery and contributed to the breakdown of families. Bakutana stressed that national leadership begins at home and that men, alongside their wives, have a key role in shaping future generations.
