Bishop Asiimwe Calls for Unity Ahead of Christmas and 2026 Elections
Rukungiri: As Uganda prepares for the Christmas festivities and the 2026 general elections, the Bishop of North Kigezi Diocese, Rt. Rev. Onesimus Asiimwe, has appealed to all Ugandans to remain united despite their different political views and party affiliations.
Bishop Asiimwe made the appeal on December 20, during a Christmas message press conference held at his office at Emmanuel Cathedral, Kinyasano, in Rukungiri Municipality.
He shared a personal experience from the previous elections, revealing that he and his wife, Maama Florence, supported different candidates for the position of Member of Parliament. Each voted for their preferred candidate, and although the candidate supported by his wife won, it did not cause any division or strain in their marriage.
The Bishop emphasized that every Ugandan has a constitutional right to freely choose and vote for leaders of their choice. He urged voters to exercise this right responsibly during the upcoming elections.
Bishop Asiimwe also called upon Uganda’s armed forces to maintain the highest level of professionalism, especially by avoiding the use of excessive force when dealing with unarmed civilians. At the same time, he advised civilians, particularly the youth, to refrain from provocative actions that could trigger confrontation with security forces.
He extended warm Christmas greetings and prayers for a blessed festive season to Roman Catholics, Orthodox, Pentecostal believers, and all other Christians. The Bishop reminded Christians that true love is found only in God and encouraged them to receive Jesus Christ as their Lord and Savior in order to experience God’s love.
