Archbishop Kaziimba and 6 Other Bishops to retire in 2027.
Kanungu: The Church of Uganda is preparing for a major leadership transition following the announcement that the Archbishop, The Most Rev. Dr. Stephen Samuel Kaziimba Mugalu, together with six bishops, will retire on August 14, 2027.
The announcement was made by the Church of Uganda Communications Officer, Sadiiki Adams, while addressing Christians at Kancerere Church of Uganda in Kinkiizi Diocese, Kanungu District, during Christmas Day celebrations.
Sadiiki said that the bishops due for retirement include the Bishop of Kinkiizi Diocese, Rt. Rev. Dan Zoreka, the Bishop of Ankole Diocese, Rt. Rev. Sheldon Mwesigwa, the Bishop of Kigezi Diocese, Rt. Rev. Gaddie Akanjuna, and among others. He explained that they will all be clocking 65 years, which is the mandatory retirement age according to the Church of Uganda Constitution.
He added that the Archbishop will soon begin farewell visits to all dioceses across the country, while the retiring bishops will also visit churches within their dioceses to bid farewell to Christians.
Sadiiki appealed to Christians to pray for the Church as it enters a key period of selecting a new Archbishop and six bishops, emphasizing the need for a peaceful and orderly transition.
He further revealed that preparations to elect new delegates to the Provincial Assembly, the Church of Uganda’s supreme decision-making body, will begin in 2026.
