Andrew Kikira Ankunda Withdraws from Rukungiri Municipality Race in Respect of NRM Ideology

Rukungiri: Aspiring Member of Parliament for Rukungiri Municipality, Andrew Kikira Ankunda, has withdrawn from the 2026 parliamentary race out of loyalty to the National Resistance Movement (NRM) and respect for its ideology and values.

Ankunda, who contested for the NRM flag in the NRM primaries, in his statement dated October 22, said his decision was based on his belief in the party’s unity and long-term vision for Uganda. He explained that although the recent NRM primary elections were marred by irregularities such as intimidation, voter bribery, and malpractice, he chose not to stand as an independent candidate in order to preserve party cohesion and discipline.

Together with other candidates, Ankunda petitioned the NRM Secretariat over the irregularities, but their case did not succeed. He said that despite this outcome, he remains committed to strengthening the party from within and promoting reforms that will enhance democracy and transparency in future primaries.

He also called for a review of the current system of lining up behind candidates, which he said exposes voters to manipulation and limits their freedom of choice. Ankunda emphasized that reforming this process is essential to building a stronger and more democratic NRM for the next generation.

In his message, Ankunda Andrew Kukora expressed gratitude to his division and cell coordinators, agents, and supporters across the 83 cells of Rukungiri Municipality for their commitment and courage throughout the campaign. He noted that poverty remains a major challenge affecting many voters, making them susceptible to bribery and political influence.

Ankunda pledged to continue supporting President Yoweri Museveni and the NRM flag bearers of his choice, urging his supporters to remain united and to vote according to their conscience. He affirmed his determination to return to active politics in 2031, better prepared and more dedicated to serving the people of Rukungiri Municipality.
