Andrew Ankunda Kikira Rejects NRM Primary Results, Vows Not to Support Gen. Tumukunde

Rukungiri: Andrew Ankunda Kikira, one of the former aspirants in the just-concluded NRM primary elections for Rukungiri Municipality parliamentary seat, has vowed not to support the declared party flag bearer, Gen. Henry Tumukunde, in the forthcoming 2026 general elections.

Speaking to our reporter on July 20, from his home in Rwakabengo Ward, Southern Division, Rukungiri Municipality, Kikira expressed deep dissatisfaction with the conduct of the NRM primaries held on Thursday, July 17, 2025. He alleged widespread bribery, voter intimidation, and multiple irregularities that compromised the integrity of the election.

“I cannot support a candidate who emerged from a process that was marred by open bribery and voter intimidation. Some of my supporters were coerced and bribed, which makes the outcome unacceptable to me,” Kikira stated.

In the final results announced by the Rukungiri NRM Electoral Commission, Gen. Tumukunde was declared the winner with 4,517 votes (45.6%), beating the incumbent MP Hon. Dr. Elisa Rutahigwa who garnered 2,843 votes (28.7%). Other candidates included Isaac Atukunda (1,658 votes – 16.7%), Andrew Ankunda Kikira (736 votes – 7.4%), Nathan Kamugisha Akandwanaho (101 votes – 1.0%), and Kabano Apollo (49 votes – 0.5%).

Kikira, along with five other defeated candidates, condemned the entire electoral process, describing it as rushed and riddled with procedural violations. He cited incidents of voting occurring as late as 4:00 PM at some polling stations, contrary to the NRM’s electoral guidelines.

“This was more of a fast-track election than a structured party process,” Kikira noted. “The inconsistencies and irregularities raise serious questions about the credibility and legitimacy of the primary results.”

Despite the setback, Kikira revealed that his mobilization teams remain active in the constituency, continuing to engage with voters and gauge public sentiment. While he did not categorically state whether he plans to run as an independent candidate in the 2026 general elections, he hinted at the possibility after consulting with his political networks.

“I appreciate the people of Rukungiri for turning up in large numbers to participate in the process. I’m especially grateful to my coordinators, supporters, and well-wishers for the love and commitment they have shown me throughout this journey,” he said.

Tumukunde, a former security minister and presidential aspirant, now faces the challenge of uniting the party base amid dissatisfaction among defeated contenders and their supporters.
