Aliban Launches “Revolution for Freedom” Pressure Group, Demands Release of Political Detainees
Rukungiri: The former People’s Front for Freedom (PFF) flag bearer and aspiring Rubabo County Member of Parliament, Hon. Aliban Ampurire Rukundo, has launched a new pressure group under PFF aimed at advocating for political rights and freedoms in Uganda.
The launch took place on January 3, during a press conference which was held at Rozera Gardens Hotel in Rwakabengo Ward, Southern Division, Rukungiri Municipality.
Ampurire said the initiative, dubbed “The Revolution for Freedom,” seeks to defend the rights of Ugandans he says are facing political persecution and unjust detention. He urged the people of Rukungiri District to “stand up and say no to abductions and injustices in Uganda.”
He stated that the pressure group will mobilize citizens to speak against what he termed unlawful arrests and rights violations, particularly targeting those he described as political prisoners.
Ampurire called on the government to release Dr. Kizza Besigye, Sam Mugumya, Sarah Birete, and others he claimed are detained for political reasons. He added that, according to the opposition, the whereabouts of Sam Mugumya remain unclear and urged authorities to provide answers to his family and the public.
He also thanked journalists, politicians, and religious leaders who he said are playing a role in advocating for the release of those detained.

During the briefing, Ampurire criticized the incumbent Rubabo County MP, Hon. Naboth Namanya, accusing him of publicly praising President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni at a recent burial ceremony and allegedly distributing NRM materials despite belonging to the opposition. Ampurire argued that this undermines PFF values, saying Dr. Besigye helped introduce Namanya to politics.
He demanded that Hon. Namanya hold a public meeting or press conference to apologize to PFF officials and members, setting 9 January 2026 as the deadline. Ampurire further urged the people of Rukungiri District to vote PFF candidates as a sign of displeasure over what he described as the arrest of their PFF colleagues.
He concluded by calling for unity among opposition supporters to “resist injustice and demand accountability.”
