80 Candidates Nominated in Rukungiri as EC Suspends Early Campaigns
Rukungiri: Rukungiri District Returning Officer, Abas Namanya, has directed all candidates who have been duly nominated to halt open campaigns until the Electoral Commission (EC) harmonizes campaign programs.
Namanya made the announcement on September 5 at the close of the registration exercise for District Chairpersons, Lord Mayor, Councilors, and Special Interest Group candidates, which began on September 3, 2025.
He revealed that the exercise attracted overwhelming participation, with three candidates nominated for the District Chairperson seat and 77 for Councilor positions, bringing the total to 80 nominees. Namanya noted that all positions are contested except in Nyarushanje Sub-county and Buyanja Town Council, where candidates went unopposed.
He commended the smooth conduct of the process, attributing it to the introduction of a computerized verification system that replaced the manual process used in the 2020 elections.
Looking ahead, Namanya announced that nominations for Municipal and City Division leaders, along with Councilors, will commence next week starting Monday.
